Today is World Health Day and this year’s campaign is – ‘Depression, Let’s Talk’

Depression is:

  • Something that can happen to anybody.
  • Not a sign of weakness.
  • Treatable, with talking a counsellor or antidepressant medication, or a combination.

A counsellor can help you work through whatever is troubling you and will work with you to find solutions to your problem. Talking with a counsellor can leave you feeling listened to, less alone, and like a load has been taken off your shoulders.

healthAbility’s counselling team help hundreds of people each year, with such issues as depression and anxiety, stress, relationship and parenting problems and grief, trauma and loss. One such person who has benefited from healthAbility’s counselling services is Katie Nass.

‘A couple of years back I faced some pretty challenging decisions, the biggest at hand was my separation from my ex-husband and although I usually pride myself on my advice giving, I found myself struggling to find an end to circle of thought processes.’ Katie says.

Katie came to see healthAbility counsellor Rod Paynter for help during a difficult time in her life and with his support overcame the challenges she faced.

Read Katie’s story, in her words…

‘My name is Katie and for a living I try my best to make people feel good about themselves by doing their hair and listening to them. Sometimes, however even I need someone to talk to. A couple of years back I faced some pretty challenging decisions, the biggest at hand was my separation from my ex-husband and although I usually pride myself on my advice giving, I found myself struggling to find an end to circle of thought processes. I made the decision to find a counsellor to help me sort out what I was feeling and to find my way back to a normal place where I no longer had panic or anxiety attacks at any minute of the day, no matter what the circumstance or situation.

Having a counsellor/psychologist to talk to helped me sort through my logical and emotional thoughts, build on my strengths, understand and fight my weaknesses. Some days I would go to sessions not expecting much because of how blue I was feeling but no matter the session every single time I would walk out with a smile on my face and a sense of fulfillment. With the right person listening you would be surprised the difference it can make to changing your life!

Life is full of surprises, ups and downs and for that reason if I ever find myself not being able to cope with something I know I can rely on my psychologist for support to help me find my way again.

I don’t feel weak, if anything I feel the strongest because when things got tough I climbed the mountain choosing to have a helping hand on the way that led me to bigger and better things. I’m happier than I ever have been before, and without acknowledging what’s going on in my head and having a trained professional help me out who never made me feel judged or like I couldn’t be completely honest with I think I would be in a very different place today…….a dark place or possibly not even on this earth.’
