The Effects of Smoke and Your Health

The impacts from smoke from the bushfires are being felt across our region. Bushfire smoke is a mixture of differently sized particles, water vapour and gases, including carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide and nitrogen oxides. Fine particles and gases in bushfire smoke are small enough to be breathed deep into the lungs and can cause health effects. Everyone, especially those with existing heart or lung conditions, the elderly, pregnant women and young children should minimise time spent in smoky conditions where practical. If you are not under threat from a fire, avoid breathing in smoke by staying inside.
