Baby Makes 3 in Gender Equality Commission case study
21 July 2021
healthAbility’s Baby Makes 3 program has been featured in a case study by the Victorian Commission for Gender Equality in the Public Sector.
A key part of the program’s work involves partnering with organisations to apply a ‘gender equality lens’ to childbirth and parenting education programs, ensuring they promote gender equality and challenge outdated gendered expectations around becoming a parent.
This case study explains how healthAbility participated in a co-design project with Northern Health, focusing on gender equality in their perinatal services.
As part of this project, Northern Health undertook a gender impact assessment on its existing Childbirth and Parenting Education Program to ensure it was inclusive of all parents, and challenged gender roles and expectations related to parenting.
Following this assessment, several changes were implemented by Northern Health. These changes were supported by tools and resources provided by healthAbility, and help to ensure Northern Health’s Childbirth and Parenting Education Program is welcoming, inclusive, and does not reinforce rigid gender roles and stereotypes.
