Primary Progressive Aphasia (PPA) is a rare form of dementia that primarily affects a person's ability to communicate. It is caused by either Alzheimer’s disease or Fronto-Temporal Dementia (FTD). Despite declining language skills, people may often have other areas of their memory intact during the initial stages of PPA.
Our team can help
Although PPA is a condition that gradually gets worse over time, our service can help improve the lives of people with PPA along with their families.
We believe that by working together, we can help to slow the effects of this challenging disease. This is achieved by supporting both individuals and their support network, to modify the ways they communicate in their daily lives. We also provide counselling and guidance, during what can be a big adjustment period for everyone.
What’s involved
Treatment with our speech pathologist can include the following:
- Targeted therapy sessions which build communication skills through new and researched techniques and providing practical solutions to day-to-day problems
- Support for families by providing tools for effective communication at home and through relationship counselling
- Group therapy sessions for people to connect with others and learn how to live well with PPA
